AP Research Paper Rubric Scorepoints (1-5)

The AP Research paper rubric distinguishes between papers that report existing knowledge (1-2) and papers that contribute new understanding (3-5).

  • Scores 1-2 primarily summarize existing research. Score 1 presents an overly broad topic with basic reporting. Score 2 attempts a research method but with weak alignment or replicability.
  • Score 3 conveys new understanding but with underdeveloped reasoning or insufficient evidence. The method may be reasonably replicable but alignment to the inquiry purpose remains questionable.
  • Score 4 supports new understanding through logical reasoning and sufficient evidence with a detailed, replicable method. The limitations and/or implications, if present, are oversimplified.
  • Score 5 justifies new understanding through a logical progression of inquiry choices and sufficient evidence. The paper explicitly addresses a gap in scholarly literature and provides thorough explanation of the limitations of the conclusion and the implications to the community of practice.
