Florida B.E.S.T. Writing Rubrics
Purpose/Structure
Evaluates the central idea or claim and how well it is maintained — an organizational structure that advances the idea, purposeful transitions within and among paragraphs, and an introduction and conclusion that create cohesion.
Development
Evaluates the quality of support: elaboration that demonstrates understanding of the topic, relevant evidence from the sources combined with original student writing, and appropriate citations. Responses that lack citations typically score low here.
Language
Evaluates vocabulary, sentence structure, tone and voice, and command of standard English conventions. Scores drop when errors form a pattern — especially errors that impede the meaning of the response.
Important: Responses are scored holistically by domain and earn scores by demonstrating most of the descriptors in a given score point. Scored responses receive a minimum of 1 point per domain (3 overall); blank, off-topic, or unscorable responses receive a condition code instead.
